Advocacy's New Mexico Guardianship Project provides legal services through guardianship and adoptions to address the growing need for formalized relationships with caregivers and the children they protect. The Kinship Guardianship Act provides that a qualified non-parent may assume legal responsibility for a child and care for the child as a parent. This project provides legal representation to adults who have stepped into the shoes of a parent when the biological or adoptive parents are unwilling or unable to care for the children. We petition the court for an order appointing the caregiver as legal guardian of the child, addressing social and financial needs during the process. In addition, we provide Online Powers of Attorney and Caregiver Affidavits as well as Financial Information.
Advocacy inc. is a 501(c)(3), nonprofit organization with the Mission to protect and promote the interests of at-risk children by providing low or no cost legal and support services to New Mexico families. Advocacy inc. was established in 1986 to provide quality legal representation for children—children who are victims in cases alleging abuse, neglect or abandonment. For this, Advocacy inc. recruits, trains, supports, and monitors 32 attorneys as Guardians ad Litem and Youth Attorneys who represent more than 800 children in the custody of the State of New Mexico. Through the New Mexico Guardianship Project, we provide low or no cost legal services for the: 1. Guardianship of Minor Children; 2. Adoption of Minor Children; 3.
