Boy Scouts of America - Great Southwest Council

Activities: The Great Southwest Council serves about 10,000 youth each year in North Central New Mexico and provides activities though: 1. Cub ScoutingA family-centered program for boys ages 6-10 that focuses on action, achievement, and purpose. Cub Scouts display strong character in order to earn achievement. 2. Boy Scouting: A program for boys ages 11-17 that achieves Scouting principles through a vigorous outdoor program and peer leadership. Expected results include increases toward ideals, proficiency in outdoor programs, and personal and leadership development. 3. Venturing: A program for young men and women ages 14-20 that provides realistic opportunities to explore adult roles, vocational opportunities, and high-adventure. Expected results include: learning to make ethical choices; acquiring skills in the areas of adventure, sports, arts and hobbies, religious life; and learning leadership roles. 4. Scouting Camp: At Gorham Scouts take part in hiking, archery, backpacking, whitewater rafting, horseback riding, target shooting, rock climbing, rappelling, swimming, geocaching, wilderness survival, and mountain biking. Scouts display measurable increases in personal values and character; sense of self-worth and usefulness; relationships with adults and peers; desire to learn; productive and creative use of time; and social adeptness.
