The Soapbox Derby project will involve 6th-8th grade students at Cottonwood Valley Charter School paired with Mechanical Engineering majors at New Mexico Tech. Four teams of middle school and college students will collaborate in an afterschool activity to plan, design, build, test, and refine soapbox derby cars that are raced in an on-campus New Mexico Tech event in April 2019. All soapbox derby cars will be built according to pre-determined rules and specifications that ensure driver and vehicle safety. Through this experience, the middle school students will have the opportunity to learn and apply design principles, a core part of STEM education. The middle school students will deliver a brief presentation of their progress at the Mechanical Engineering department's Design Conference in December 2018. After this initial year of the project, the event will be extended to include additional middle schools in the area.
