Dharma Communities

Imagine a living arrangement in which multiple, individually owned housing units are oriented around a common open area and a common house – a place where community is a way of life.  Imagine residents who actively cooperate in planning the project with the goal of recreating an old fashioned neighborhood that supports friendly cooperation, socialization, mutual support, and an active dharma practice.  Imagine a community approach to independent living.

The Dharma Communities Project is a nonprofit whose focus is nurturing the formation of residential communities that connect inviting places to live with opportunities for a rich dharma practice and a vibrant sense of community.  Cohousing has emerged as a particularly attractive model, regardless of the location.  Cohousing has become an increasingly well traveled path in this country. A typical project is likely to be 25-30 housing units with a community center.

Dharma Communities

We support the formation of intentional residential communities of Western Dharma practitioners who share a deeply held commitment of personal practice and service through all stages of life. The communities are intended to be open to all ages, with an emphasis on mutual support.  Young families would benefit from the child-care and “elder wisdom” that older residents could give, while older residents would benefit from support of neighbors to facilitate “aging in place” and independent living as long as possible. Decision-making will be guided by compassionate and deep listening and wise speaking skills.
