Friends of the Public Library is a support organization of the Public Library Albuquerque Bernalillo County. In addition to its role as a source of books, magazines and other media, the Public Library supports literacy and lifelong learning and advances the use of new technology. The Friends was founded in 1969. It raises funds through the sale of donated books and other media at monthly book sales, a year-round bookshop, and through online sales. The organization has one paid part-time employee and some 70 volunteers. It is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Since 1998, the Friends has donated over $1.1 million for cultural programming at the Library. Cultural programming includes the annual citywide Summer Reading Program, the AMP Concert Series at 18 branch libraries, the Speaker Series at Special Collections, and Dia de los Niños. In addition, the organization maintains The Center for the Book and funds staff development.
The Friends of the Public Library is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. Members of Friends of the Public Library receive free admission to the first two hours of the monthly Book Sale and a 10% discount in the Friends Bookshop at the Main Library.
Our mission is to maintain a charitable and educational organization to support the library, to increase the library's resources, to advocate for the public library, to recycle donated materials, to stimulate use of the library's resources, and to encourage and support educational and literacy programs through the library.
