This program is a day camp for sixth, seventh and eighth graders designed to promote understanding of and appreciation for the science of archaeology and its revelations in regard to Native culture. In five three-hour sessions, students learn some of the basics of archaeology through a "mock dig" activity in which they use excavation and mapping tools and record their findings. Students use reading an math skills as well as learning more about scientific method, the pre-history of NM, and Native Culture. Stewardship of archaeological and historical sites is emphasized. The Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site and Museum are also utilized in the program.
We are dedicated to the preservation of Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site through protection, promotion and interpretation. Tijeras Pueblo Archaeological Site, Interpretive Trail and Museum are integrated resources that encourage appreciation of and respect for traditional pueblo lifeways past and present.
