Grade Court is a treatment court for juveniles. Success in school, and relationships with other court ordered people are part of the conditions of probation. The juvenile must not only stay in school, but complete homework and receive good grades. If a juvenile does not follow the rules set forth by the judge, immediate actions are taken. Positive reinforcement is used for improvement. Counseling sessions with peers and parent groups are an integral part of the program. Each help to insure that responsibility has been taken for the juvenile's action. The grade court requires that the juvenile and the parents take an active part in building positive actions. The program is a minimum of one year.
Juvenile Probation Officers (JPOs), employed by the New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD), work out of 29 local offices. The court sets the terms of probation with recommendations from the JPO, District Attorney, and the youth’s attorney. JPOs maintain contact with clients in placement. Aftercare (formerly parole) refers to the term of supervision that occurs once a juvenile is conditionally released to the community after serving a facility commitment term. Clients in aftercare are subject to being returned to detention or facility placement for rule violations or other offenses.
