Kithara Project partners with Valle Vista Elementary School, in Albuquerque's South Valley, to offer comprehensive classical guitar education to 36 elementary and middle school aged students who would otherwise be without access to such a program. All participating students are provided, by Kithara Project, with their own guitars and attend weekly bilingual group classes (never exceeding 12 per class) under the leadership of Genevieve Leitner, who is currently on faculty at Albuquerque Academy. Ms. Leitner is assisted by a handful of high school aged guitar students from Albuquerque Academy; thus the program doubles as a teaching mentorship. Students also receive regular opportunites to perform throughout the city (e.g., UNM's Keller Hall and the Albuquerque Zoo) and to work with visiting guest artists brought by Kithara Project. Beginning in Fall 2019, students will also have the option of private lessons, which are indispensable to reinforce classwork and to refine technical issues unique to each student.
Kithara Project improves the lives and opportunities of children and young people through the classical guitar.
