Bernalillo County children are signed up by their parents. They receive one children's book per month by mail, some of which are bilingual (English-Spanish). Parents are encouraged to talk with their children about the book and its pictures, even if the language the family speaks is different from the books they receive. Children experience the joy of receiving mail in their own names and then a second joy in having their parents read the book with them. Parents are introduced to reading, to other sources of books such as the Public Library, and taught the importance of words in their children's development.
Libros for Kids, Inc. is dedicated to improving reading readiness for all children in the greater Albuquerque Area. Our primary effort is through our affiliation with the Imagination Library, of the Dollywood Foundation. Age appropriate books are mailed directly to the homes of children age 0-5 every month throughout Bernalillo County. Libros is unique as we accomplish this mission through extensive community partnerships that we continue to develop. Libros dedication to improving literacy, leads to other projects, arising from our multiple collaborations outside of book mailings. These are in the form of video productions, other grants that support opportunities for all ages of children and other partners in the community.
