To increase books in the home and to encourage reading at home, our Let's Read project gives annually nine to twelve new, age-appropriate books to each of the 2100 children in the nine Title 1 elementary schools in Grant County. Since 2001, Let's Read has been granted over 265,000 books from First Book National Book Bank for distribution to children.. Because of limited family budgets and lack of a children's book store in Grant County, many children would have few or no books at home without Let's Read donations..Some communities in Grant County do not have a public library.
When supplies are available, Let's Read gives books to children in private, middle and high schools.
Let's Read gives books to all at community events. Let's Read gives away hundreds of books at our annual Love Your Library Day event.
Let's Read is the work of volunteers only, sometimes thirty-five participate over the year.
The Literacy Link - Leamos mission is to raise literacy levels in Grant County, New Mexico through free tutoring and outreach projects.
Most of our adult learners have about a sixth-grade skill level. We offer free one-to-one tutoring to adults, hold workshops and classes in ESL and computer literacy, and have two educational projects running at the jail. We also tutor children and provide thousands of free books to schoolchildren every year.
