Within our Educational Services Department, we are creating a program to serve students with dyslexia by providing early identification and strategic intervention.
The International Dyslexia Association states that 15-20% of children have some form of dyslexia symptoms. Dyslexia occurs in people of all backgrounds and intellectual levels. Students with dyslexia who do not receive appropriate intervention, struggle in school and are much more likely to drop out by the age of 16. Our goal is to implement a district-wide intervention program for students with dyslexia. Our program will include screening tools, interventions implemented across our schools, and training for the individuals who will deliver these interventions.
The universal screening tool, AimsWeb, will be used to assess all students in kindergarten and first grade, as well as other students within the school system who exhibit signs of dyslexia. Intensive teacher training will be conducted to implement the multisensory structured language program. Materials will be provided for trained staff to deliver the instruction to identified students. AimsWeb will be used to monitor student progress.
The result of early identification and appropriate and intensive intervention will change the lives of students who would otherwise have struggled throughout their school experience.
The mission of the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District: Each student will graduate with the skills needed to contribute and thrive in a changing world.
