The SPOT for Community Wellness is a service navigation center housed in a duplex classroom module (an old closed charter school) with a community Art/Maker Space next door. S.P.O.T. stands for Strenghtening Pride, Optimism, Trust. Two other duplex modules are available for other programs. The SPOT is on a centrally located 2+ acre property, recently acquired by MAS Comunidad for the benefit of the community. Future plans include a youth space, meeting rooms, a legal aid office, sports courts, a walking/bike path, a community garden, space for farmers market, craft fairs, community gatherings etc. A 20' container stores excess clothes from a ReUse Center (free neighborhood exchange) we run at our local transfer station. When full, clothes will be picked up by Clothes Helping Kids, an Albuquerque nonprofit recycler serving Savers Thrift Stores. In our small rural unincorporated communities, we are the only nonprofit and we umbrella a series of projects including our local Health Council, the PPCC (the Picuris-Peñasco Community Coalition) which meets monthly and holds an annual health fair and the Peñasco Theatre, which sponsors afterschool classes, Summer Circus Arts Camps (both kids and teens) and creative performances.
