NHTSA is part of the U.S. Department of Transportation and is responsible for reducing deaths, injuries and economic loss as a result of car crashes. Nationally, NHTSA sets and enforces safety standards for vehicles, equipment, investigates safety defects in vehicles, enforces fuel standards, and conducts traffic safety and injury prevention initiatives. The Region 6 office in Fort Worth TX partners with the State highway safety offices in Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and the Indian Nations to help manage effective federal safety grant programs in the states. In addition, NHTSA works tirelessly to reduce drunk driving and raise the use of safety belts/child safety seats, as well as to address other problems identified by data that contribute significantly to the deaths, injuries and crashes occurring on America's roads.
