The Low Income Taxpayer Clinic provides free legal assistance to low-income taxpayers who find themselves in dispute with the Internal Revenue Service. Such a dispute might be when the IRS has denied a deduction or credit claimed on your return or when they have issued a "Notice of Deficiency" and you have 90 days to petition the U.S. Tax Court, for instance. Eligibility depends on the size of your family unit and your total income. To learn if you are eligible for these services, call 833-LGL-HELP (833-545-4357) and ask for the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. Please note, the Clinic does not generally prepare tax returns, it assists those in dispute with the IRS.
While the Clinic attorneys work out of New Mexico Legal Aid's Albuquerque office, Clinic services are available statewide by phone, fax, email and Skype.
