The Attorney General is the chief law enforcement officer for the state. T he Attorney General has primary authority for enforcement of consumer protection and antitrust laws, prosecution of criminal appeals and some complex white-collar crimes, training and certification of peace officers, and most natural resource and environmental matters. Additionally, the Office of the Attorney General works concurrently with New Mexico’s 13 district attorneys and other local, state and federal law enforcement authorities to carry out its criminal justice responsibilities and activities.
It is the mission of the New Mexico Office of the Attorney General to protect New Mexicans in order to make our communities safe and prosperous. We prosecute criminal and civil offenses, advocate for consumers and those without a voice, empower the public by proactively educating it and connecting the public with beneficial resources. We serve as legal counsel for the State and its agents.
