Our first goal is to fund research to investigate the history of Estaca by hiring a consultant to document the many layers of history with a second goal of moving towards registry as a Historic District that includes form systems, acequias, trails, and archeological sites.
A gravel mine above the area has destroyed many petroglyphs and the Eagle Gap Trail that crossed the Rio Grande River over to Ojo Caliente Hot Springs. We wish to docement the remaining historical sites for future generations.
A second goal is to record oral history of the area.
Our mission is to preserve, protect and rehabilitate the historic site and crossroads centered on the Estaca de San Franisco Placita. The community of Estaca extends along the Rio Grande River from the Placita south to El Guique and embraces connections with historic sites including our Acequia de San Rafael del Guique, the Mesa Prieta Preserve, the Eagle Gap Trail, Los Luceros, Pfiogue and the Pueblo of Ohkay Owingeh.
