The National Indian Youth Leadership Project (NIYLP) is a New Mexico-based nonprofit, innovator and leader in substance abuse prevention and positive youth development for Native American youth. Our mission is to nurture the potential of Native youth to be contributors to a more positive world through adventure-based learning and service to family, community, and nature. NIYLP has a 30+-year track record creating positive outcomes for high-risk and at-risk American Indian youth through our evidence-based programming. Project Venture, our flagship program, was recognized as an Evidence-Based Model Program by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (SAMHSA) and the National Registry of Effective Programs and Practices (NREPP)— the only Native American prevention approach to receive this recognition—and recommended for replication nationally and internationally. Project Venture has been replicated in more than 70 communities across 25 states, Canada, Europe, and South Pacific.
NIYLP's mission is to nurture the potential of Native youth to be contributors to a more positive world through adventure-based learning and service to family, community, and nature. NIYLP envisions a world with generations of healthy, capable, caring, resilient Native youth who contribute to their groups, families, communities and nations.
