Reach Out and Read is the only national literacy organization that operates within the medical system by partnering with pediatric providers to encourage families to read aloud together. Research shows that our program results in more frequent reading at home and improved language development. Reach Out and Read seeks to maximize the potential of the pediatric primary care setting to support the positive, language-rich parent/caregiver-child interactions that foster healthy brain development during the critical early years of life.
Reading aloud with young children connects to some of the most significant parts of child development. It provides children with a foundation for curiosity and self-regulation and it promotes resilience and mitigates toxic stress. Our work starts with early literacy, but naturally extends to social-emotional development, motivation, persistence, confidence, and so much more. At Reach Out and Read, we prepare children for success in kindergarten by reaching them long before they ever enter a formal preschool or classroom setting.
