A food pantry distributes groceries to people who are poor, low income. Food pantries receive food through private donations, the USDA commodities programs, or/or through a Food Bank. Some pantries are in church basements, while others may be nothing more than a closet in a daycare facility. Food pantries are usually staffed by part-time volunteers, and hours and eligibility criteria can change. The mission of the Rio Arriba County Senior Program is to encourage the Seniors of Rio Arriba County both well and frail to utilize our programs and services to enrich their lives by providing a coordinated system of opportunities to promote independent living and overall well-being with the primary focus on the rural and low-income minority.
