The Student Financial Aid & College Awareness Workshop educates students and their families on financial aid, scholarship opportunities and other pertinent information needed to access the pathway to higher education in a multilingual format.
Targeting the 115,000 Latino and other minority students in grades 6--12 in San Joaquin County, the purpose of the Student Financial Aid and College Awareness Workshop is to educate low-to-moderate income families on the process to complete student financial aid forms. One of the major barriers to attending college in minority communities is cost and many parents do not know about the availability of or process to obtain financial aid. The program provides an opportunity for students and their families to learn about the resources available for college. The Chamber's program is unlike many other programs in that it does not provide scholarships; instead it empowers students and their families with the tools and assistance needed to find the financial support that best suits their needs.
The need for this annual workshop has increased dramatically since its inception. In the past thirteen years, attendance has risen from 200 to over 1,500. This program fulfills a critical need for the young people in our community.
The San Joaquin County Hispanic Chamber Foundation works closely with the San Joaquin County Hispanic Chamber of Commerce
to promote education and business development in San Joaquin County and to carry on charitable activities associated with this goal.
