We bring this interactive program to your 2nd grade classroom. Our instructors present a 1-hour lesson about local animals and their physical characteristics. Students visit 5-6 hands-on stations with animal "evidence" (skulls, tracks, fur/feathers) while recording their observations in a journal and figuring out what animal they come from. We then come together to go over observations and reveal the mystery animals.
Program includes scientific inquiry and close observation, working in groups, comparison of animal characteristics, herbivore/omnivore/carnivore, and local biodiversity and habitat.
The mission of the Sandia Mountain Natural History Center is to work within New Mexico communities to develop an ecologically literate citizenry. The Center is a joint partnership between Albuquerque Public Schools and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science.
