Seed2Need currently grows two acres of vegetables and an acre of fruit trees and donates the produce to Roadrunner Food Bank, food pantries and other food assistance programs in Bernalillo and Sandoval Counties. In addition, we glean fruit from other orchards in Corrales and the North Valley. Vegetables grown are based on interviews with local food pantries, productivity, length of harvest, nutritional value and regional taste. Examples include tomatoes, green chile, cucumbers and squash. The food pantries we serve pick up the produce directly at the gardens so it is farmer's market quality and in the hands of the families who need it within hours of harvest. Approximately 1/3 of our volunteers are Sandoval County Master Gardeners. The other 2/3 are members of the general public, students from local schools such as Bosque School and Albuquerque Academy, boy and girl scouts, 4-H and community service groups from local churches and businesses.
Seed2Need is a non-profit, collaborative effort between the Sandoval County Master Gardeners, property owners in the village of Corrales, volunteer groups and private citizens from Corrales, Rio Rancho, Placitas and Albuquerque. Our mission is to reduce hunger and improve the nutrition of families facing food insecurity by growing fresh fruits and vegetables and donating it to food pantries in our community. Over 437,000 pounds of produce has been donated since 2010.
