1. Little Free Library
The Taos Milagro Rotary Club has placed 15 Little Free Library in a variety of places in Taos County. The LFL contain a mix of adult and children's books, they are placed in low income areas housing projects, high visibility area, Medical clinics, Trailer court housing, and isolated areas. We wanted the books to be easily available to all but especially kids who may not have an easy way to the public library, and being available 24/7, with no return date nor fines. By putting more books in the community and especially in children’s homes, this definitely encourages and promotes reading in the homes.
2. For the Love of Reading
Taos Milagro Rotary Club started a literacy program in April 2017 in the Taos Pueblo Day School. In 2017-18 school year, the program expanded to read to 48 students from K through 3rd grade, weekly in Taos Pueblo Day School as well as at Ranchos Elementary School, with one First Grade Class and one Second Grade Class. This literacy project is to provide one-on-one reading sessions by trained volunteers for 30 minutes/week to students who have been identified as reading below grade level from K through 3rd grade by their teachers. We also gave all of the children (90) in participating classes a book of their choosing about every three weeks, helping each child develop their own home library.
