Our Early Childhood Education program serves children from 3-6 years of age, giving them an outstanding preparation for continuing into our first-eighth grade program. Blossoms (age 3-4) and Gnomes (age 5-6) attend our beautiful grounds Monday-Thursday, 8:30am to 3:00pm. Half-day options are available for Blossoms.
We are a dynamic community of students, families, teachers, staff and friends committed to providing a quality Waldorf education for our students in a safe and nurturing environment. The philosophy of Waldorf education grows out of the work of Rudolf Steiner, scientist, philosopher, educator, and visionary who founded the first Waldorf School in Germany in 1919. With its founding, he hoped to create an educational philosophy designed to cultivate the hearts and minds of young people, and “Receive the children in reverence, educate them in love, and send them forth in freedom.”
This philosophy has withstood the test of time, and is as relevant now as it was in 20th century Europe. The Taos Waldorf School is proud to be a part of a global network of schools and early childhood centers, and part of the fastest growing independent educational movement in the world. We have a clear vision for the future – and our commitment to providing a top-notch Waldorf education to the children in our care remains unaltered.
The impulse for the Taos Waldorf School began as a playgroup, which grew into a school when four families pooled their resources of a thousand dollars. In 1994 the school officially opened its doors with 17 students in Kindergarten and First Grade.
Our mission is to provide a comprehensive Waldorf education that is physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually engaging for the whole child. We strive to create a non-competitive, physically and emotionally safe learning environment that encourages community involvement and a robust connection to the land. We foster a life-long love of learning by sparking the children’s imagination and developing their capacity for independent thinking. We cultivate each student’s unique gifts and enable students to become balanced, vigorous, life-affirming and compassionate beings in an environment that promotes respect and cultural awareness.
