TARS is a 12-hour a day Boot Camp program that operates Monday through Saturday out of the Hobbs' Houston Junior High School. TARS provides 1-day, 10-day, and 16-week programs. TARS is a last attempt to keep kids in school. One of their programs operates to re-integrate children who have come out of a long-term lock up. All programs provide extensive community service, counseling, anger management, life skills, and parent counseling. They work in conjunction with the JPPO office, Palmers Drug Abuse Program (PDAP), the corrections office, Adolescent Day Treatment (ADT), and the Guidance Center of Lea County. By serving the community TARS works to get the children to be productive members of society and active in their schooling with tutoring. Recently, a truancy program has beeen implemented. Incentives are given to the children for good behavior. In addition to the day program, home and evening monitoring, and Saturday community service are offered to keep the children on track through the weekend. Rewards are given to the students as grades come up, and privileges such as wearing civilian clothing, television privileges, etc. are given back as the students improve in school.
