The Horse Shelter serves as a sanctuary for New Mexico’s abandoned, abused and neglected horses. Rescued horses will be rehabilitated and adopted out whenever possible to environments that support their well-being and future long-term care.
Incorporated in 2000 and situated on 128+ acres, The Horse Shelter is the oldest and largest Equine Rescue in NM. A strong working board, dedicated and experienced staff and an excellent volunteer program with over 50 volunteers allows us to rescue and rehabilitate NM's horses in need.
Our rescue population averages 75 horses, with a maximum capacity of 100. Most of our horses are received by the NM Livestock Board after the cruelty seizure or estray process and we also take owner surrenders on a case to case basis. In 2022 we took in 35 horses and were able to adopt 26 into good new homes.
We rely on individual donations, foundation grants, sponsorships, event income and our Resale Store income in Santa Fe to support our operations.
The Horse Shelter's mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and facilitate the adoption of abused, abandoned and neglected horses in New Mexico.
