Opera lovers have flocked to the magnificent northern New Mexico mountains every July and August for the past 60 seasons to enjoy live performances in the Opera’s dramatic and intimate, 2,200-seat open air, adobe amphitheater, which blends harmoniously with the high desert landscape and makes an indelible impression on all who come. The Santa Fe Opera has grown to be one of the foremost opera festivals in the world. The Santa Fe Opera is praised for its innovative repertory and high standards of excellence, and its orchestra is recognized internationally for the quality of its playing in a wide-ranging and demanding repertory.
The Santa Fe Opera has one of the most distinguished and award-winning education and community outreach programs of any opera company in the United States. Each year, in addition to the 80,000 audience members who attend the company’s main-stage performances, the Opera serves 50,000 children and adults across New Mexico, southern Colorado, and West Texas through 12 unique education and community engagement programs that bring enriching arts education opportunities and creative outlets to many underserved, at-risk, and economically disadvantaged populations, including New Mexico public school students, ESL students, incarcerated youth, the homeless, seniors, and pueblo populations. The majority of these programs are offered free of charge.
The Santa Fe Opera was the first opera company to establish an apprentice training program.
The Santa Fe Opera’s mission is to advance the operatic art form by presenting ensemble performances of the highest quality in a unique setting with a varied repertoire of new, rarely performed, and standard works; to ensure the excellence of opera’s future through its apprentice programs for singers, technicians, and arts administrators; and to foster and enrich an understanding and appreciation of opera among a diverse public.
