Gerard’s House is Santa Fe’s children’s grief center. For the past nine years, we have turned our focus to the city’s most vulnerable grieving youth—kids who have immigrated from war-torn and impoverished regions, kids who are homeless, kids who are in foster care and kids who have attempted suicide. Our staff, board and volunteers continually partner with community advocates to remove barriers to access and offer support for grieving kids wherever they are. Services include 28 weekly peer grief support groups, a mobile unit, suicide-prevention programs, individual sessions and support for parents/caregivers. All services are free of charge for youth ages 3 – 21 and for their parents and caregivers. We also provide grief support for adults in English and in Spanish. Every child and teenager in our grief support groups has either experienced the death of a parent or other loved one or is separated from a parent or other loved one because of deportation, incarceration or immigration status.
Mission Statement: When a child’s parent or sibling dies, there are usually many adults who want to help that child. But they don’t know how. Children and teenagers who are grieving usually don’t know what they need, either. Their lives have been turned upside down, and, at the same time, so have their feelings and thoughts.
That’s where Gerard’s House comes in. The mission of Gerard’s House is to provide safe spaces for grieving children, youth and families, where healing happens through acceptance and peer support. Whether a parent or other loved one has died, disappeared, been incarcerated, deported or separated by borders, we are here for kids, teenagers and their families. One of the most powerful things we offer is peer support in a safe, nurturing space.
