NISN envisions a transformative space for innovation, particularly in communities that historically have been denied educational choices that adequately reflect their vision, values, and culture. Core Values include: respect (harmonious relationships); responsibility (past, present, and future); community/service (we belong to our larger communities); culture (we honor our cultures and others); perseverance (Indigenous people have endured through the determination of those who came before); and reflection (Indigenous thinking and learning involves a deliberate looking inward and contemplation).
NISN is currently comprised of seven schools in New Mexico, and it is supporting the launch or redesign of schools in additional communities in New Mexico, Oklahoma, Colorado, California, and South Dakota. NISN is disseminating its best practices locally and regionally, promoting equity and responsiveness to learning needs of diverse students.
The NACA Inspired Schools Network (NISN) is building a movement of students, families, and educators to create excellent schools relevant to the communities they serve. NISN works with fellows who are committed to Indigenous communities to establish schools in New Mexico and throughout the country that will create strong leaders who are academically prepared, secure in their identities, healthy, and ultimately transforming their communities.NISN’s mission is to transform Indigenous education by engaging communities, building networked schools of academic excellence and cultural relevance, and serving students from early learning to adulthood so that they are academically prepared for college, secure in their identity, and healthy.
