The NMCTR program is based on experiential learning and individualized programs of instruction. Students with special needs come to the Ranch to learn all aspects of horsemanship: grooming, tacking up, leading, horse communications, parts, markings and colors of horses and new vocabulary. Our individualized lesson plans are based on physical, emotional and cognitive assessments for each individual. Each student and parents receive feedback on the student's performance and progress within the lesson plans designed for that student. Instructors use a checklist of competencies to track student progress. Physical benefits of the program include improvements to balance and coordination, posture, proprioception, muscle strength and range of motion. Additionally, the program stimulates social and behavioral development, teaching students problem-solving skills, self-discipline and responsibility, decision-making skills, teamwork and collaboration.
