P&S has served as a voice for New Mexico Veterans with trauma since its inception. While 20 Veterans still take their lives in this country every day, the situation for all New Mexicans is dire. Our state currently has the 2nd highest suicide rate in the country and Paws and Stripes has made it our mission to change this statistic. The organization offers community-wide trainings in suicide prevention. By teaching everyday New Mexicans how to recognize signs of suicide in coworkers, friends, and family members and then know what to do to help. Paws and Stripes teaches QPR, which stands for Question. Persuade. Refer. Just like CPR, it is an emergency response to someone in crisis and saves lives. QPR is the most taught "gatekeeper" training in the world and is designed for ANYONE to intercede and help someone with suicidal ideations. QPR is a designated “program with evidence of effectiveness” in SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices. As part of the training, Paws and Stripes also teaches "Lethal Means Safety." This idea teaches individuals methods to create barriers to suicide. Training is available to organizations, schools, offices, Veteran services, tribal groups, LGBTQ centers, etc. either at our office or potentially on your site.
Paws and Stripes’s mission is to provide animal-assisted therapy and other mental health services to disabled military veterans and their families living with service-connected trauma. Saving two lives at a time.
