Safer New Mexico Now (Safer) offers free educational events to provide parents or caregivers hands-on instruction on the proper selection, installation, and use of car seats and booster seats. Nationally certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians spend approximately 30 minutes per seat with caregivers, teaching them important information regarding common errors in car seat safety and answering questions. If a technician determines a car seat to be recalled, expired, or otherwise unsafe, replacement seats are available for a small fee.
Safer offers three types of car seat services, including, Car Seat Fitting Stations, Car Seat Inspection Clinics, and Virtual Car Seat Education Sessions. Fitting stations offer appointments during regular hours of operation at 11 permanent locations statewide. Car seat Clinics offer the same services, but are offered on a first-come-first-served basis and no appointments are required. Virtual education sessions are by appointment and seat replacements are not available.
The New Mexico Child Safety Seat Distribution Program helps provide car seats and education on how to properly use them to low-income New Mexico families at a minimal cost. There are approximately 44 distribution locations statewide. Specific qualifications must be met before families are issued a seat.
