Early Head Start is a federally funded community-based program for low-income families with pregnant women, infants, and toddlers up to age 3. EHS promotes the school readiness of children by enhancing their cognitive, social, emotional and physical development. Early Head Start programs also provides or links families with needed services.
The program's one center offers full-day Head Start classrooms to support parents who are working or are in school and provides a home-based option for expectant mothers and parents who wish to keep their infants and toddlers at home. The program aligned its services with the Tribe's mission to preserve the native culture and language. Every aspect of
children's learning reflected the values and traditions of the Santo Domingo Pueblo heritage, with an emphasis on communal sharing during play.
Santo Domingo Pueblo, also known as Kewa, has been one of the central Pueblo communities in New Mexico and the homelands to many people for thousands of years. Their ancestral ties can be traced back to Mesa Verde and Chaco Canyon ancestors.
