engages youth and young adults in long-term mentorship,
education, and skills development. Potential Apprentices must first successfully complete a session of
Raíces de Tradicíon y Salud before applying for an apprenticeship. We host 2 to 4 apprentices at any
given time, based on interest, staff capacity, and the availability of funding. Current and past
apprentices have assisted with farm production, coordinated produce sales at area farmers’ markets,
and helped develop value-added farm products. Apprentices also receive public health education,
business and marketing education, and life skills training. Apprentices are provided ample
opportunity to develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills, pursue their own special research
project, engage with community experts and professionals, and are provided a stipend to support their
efforts.
La Semilla Food Center's mission is to build a healthy, self-reliant, fair, and sustainable food system in the Paso del Norte region of southern New Mexico and El Paso, Texas.
