La Cosecha: a community education program to reach youth, families, and communities. This program utilizes a promotora approach (train the trainer) to employ program associates that implement a six week family cooking education program, seasonal garden education training series, and expand our apprenticeship opportunities for young adults. The program effectively builds local capacity, increases linkages to varied resources, and establishes the community learning spaces through support from our committed partners. Youth and families develop leadership, gardening, cooking, nutrition, and self-advocacy skills. In addition, families are encouraged to apply their knowledge to produce food in their own homes and youth learn marketing, financial management, and business skills through apprenticeships.
La Semilla Food Center's mission is to build a healthy, self-reliant, fair, and sustainable food system in the Paso del Norte region of southern New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. We work with children, youth, and families to build awareness around food issues, provide informed analysis, and create alternatives for healthier environments and communities.
